How Does Visia Skin Analysis Work?

VISIA Skin Analysis is used to capture High Quality, Standardized Facial Images. VISIA's multi-point positioning system and live image overlay make it easy to capture perfectly registered images to document progress over time. The capturing system uses three types of flashes that can highlight the various conditions on the surface level and the deeper layers of the skin such as:

Wrinkles

Wrinkles are lines, folds, or creases that form on the skin as a result of aging, sun exposure, smoking, and other environmental factors. As we age, our skin loses elasticity and the ability to retain moisture, which can lead to wrinkles. Sun exposure can also damage the skin and cause wrinkles by breaking down collagen and elastin, the fibers that give skin its firmness and elasticity. Smoking can also contribute to wrinkles by constricting blood vessels in the skin, reducing blood flow and oxygen to the skin cells. There are also genetic factors that can make some people more susceptible to wrinkles.

Texture

Texture is primarily an analysis of skin surface smoothness. It can include factors such as smoothness, roughness, dryness, and oiliness. Skin texture can be affected by a variety of factors including genetics, age, environmental factors, and skin conditions. Texture measures skin color and smoothness by identifying gradations in color from the surrounding skin tone, as well as peaks (shown in yellow) and valleys (shown in blue) on the skin surface that indicate variations in the surface texture.

Surface Spots

Skin surface spots, also known as hyperpigmentation, are areas of skin that are darker in color than the surrounding skin. Surface Spots are typically brown or red skin lesions including freckles, acne scars, hyperpigmentation, and vascular lesions. They vary in size and shape and are normally visible to the naked eye. VISIA pinpoints their location, size, and color so we can determine the type and recommend the right treatment to address them.

Brown Spots

Brown Spots are lesions on the skin such as hyperpigmentation, freckles, lentigines, and melasma. Brown Spots occur from an excess of Melanin. Melanin is produced by melanocytes in the bottom layer of the epidermis. Brown Spots produce an uneven appearance to the skin and are detected in VISIA by RBX.

UV Spots

UV Spots occur when melanin coagulates below the skin surface as a result of sun damage. UV spots are dark, flat spots on the skin that typically appear on areas of the body that are frequently exposed to the sun. UV Spots are generally invisible under normal lighting conditions. The selective absorption of the UV light by the epidermal melanin enhances its display and detection by VISIA.

Red Area

Red Areas represent a potential variety of conditions, such as acne, inflammation, Rosacea, or spider veins. Blood vessels and hemoglobin contained in the papillary dermis, a sub-layer of skin, give these structures their red color, which is detected by the RBX Technology in VISIA. Acne spots and inflammation vary in size but are generally round in shape. Rosacea is usually larger and diffuse compared to acne, and spider veins usually are short and thin and can be interconnected in a dense network.

Visible Pores

Visible pores are small openings on the surface of the skin that allow the release of oil and sweat from your glands. As we age and our skin loses its elasticity, this can cause pores to expand over time, making them more visible as we age. They are most commonly found on the face, particularly on the nose and forehead, and can appear larger or more prominent due to factors such as genetics, age, sun damage, built-up dirt, and excess oil production.

Clogged Pores

Clogged Pores are a common skin concern that occurs when the hair follicles on the skin become blocked. These blocked follicles can be caused by a variety of factors, including excess oil production, dead skin cells not shedding properly, bacteria, hormonal changes, certain medications, and certain cosmetics or skincare products. Clogged pores can manifest as blackheads, whiteheads, or small bumps on the skin, and can lead to acne if left untreated. They can occur in various areas of the body but are most commonly found on the face, neck, chest, and back. Oily skin type is more prone to clogged pores than others and people with acne-prone skin are also more likely to experience clogged pores.

All About VISIA Skin Analysis

What images are captured with VISIA Skin Analysis?

The VISIA software captures a range of images of your skin, along with automatic skin type classification, refined facial feature detection, and more. Images of the surface and subsurface of the skin are taken with IntelliFlash®, cross-polarized and UV lighting, and processed with Canfield's RBX® Technology.

UV photography provides data on sun damage and includes UV fluorescence imaging to reveal porphyrins (bacteria in the pores).

The unique color signatures of red and brown skin components are separated to allow visualization of spider veins, inflammation, hyperpigmentation, and other skin conditions.

The facial images are high-quality, standardized pictures that perfectly show different aspects of your skin’s features from the front, left, and right. This allows you to see progress made over time.

VISIA Skin Analysis Technology Features

Percentile Scores

Using the world’s largest skin database, VISIA can assign an age grade to your skin compared to other patients within the same age group and skin type. This patented comparison to norms analysis uses information about spots, wrinkles, texture, pores, UV spots, brown spots, red areas, and porphyrins to predict your skin age.

TruSkin Age™

TruSkin Age™ compares a patient's facial skin features to a vast database of their peers to calculate their relative skin age. The TruSkin Age tool analyzes eight different skin features including wrinkles, surface spots, and UV damage, to determine the patient's overall skin condition and age. This composite score provides an easy to understand metric that can help identify the best skin care and treatment options for patients.

Injectables Simulation

If you’ve ever wondered whether you could benefit from BOTOX® Cosmetic or Dermal Fillers but were unsure how you would look with injectables, VISIA Skin Analysis can give you a virtual preview of the potential results. Patient’s can view the possible outcome of treatment with cheek and lip fillers, as well as BOTOX® Cosmetic for frown lines and crow’s feet. This can give patient’s an idea on what they can expect from injectables and help them make a better informed decision about their treatment options.

Advanced Aging Simulation

The VISIA Aging Simulation Software allows predictions of how your face may age up until the age of 80. It is able to show you where your skin may start sagging, form wrinkles, and have more pigmentation based on the images it analyzes (The VISIA Aging Simulation can show you both aging and reversal).
