More About the Male Breast Reduction Procedure

A male breast reduction in Scottsdale is usually performed under general anesthesia on an outpatient basis, and typically takes one to three hours. Anthony A. Admire might use one of several different techniques during your surgery, depending on the extent of the procedure. If your enlarged breasts are primarily caused by excessive fatty tissue, for example, liposuction can remove the excess fat through incisions may be made around the edges of the areola, or in the underarm. If excess glandular tissue is the primary cause of the enlarged breast, the tissue will be excised in addition to the liposuction.

In more severe instances, where large amounts of fat or glandular tissue must be removed, excess skin may remain that has not reshaped well to the new contour of the breast.

In these cases, the excess skin may have to be removed, as well. Dr. Admire will then close the incisions using sutures before covering them with a dressing and firmly wrapping your chest to keep the skin properly in place.

What is recovery from male breast reduction like?

Following your gynecomastia surgery in Scottsdale, you’ll experience some bruising, swelling, and discomfort, all of which will dissipate after a few days and can be reduced with prescribed medication.

You’ll wear and elastic pressure garment for about two weeks, to help reduce swelling, and at night for several weeks after your surgery. Swelling and any skin discoloration will partially subside after a week or two, at which point your stitches will be removed.

You’ll be encouraged to walk around on the day of your surgery, and can expect to return to your daily life in about a week. You can start to exercise lightly after a week, but should avoid strenuous activity for about three to four weeks after your surgery.

Although the body does naturally form scar tissue any time an incision is made whether during surgery or through trauma, the incisions required in gynecomastia surgery are fairly small and are placed along the natural curves of the breasts, helping to conceal them. The scars that result from this surgery do not usually end up raised or discolored but should blend in well with the surrounding skin.

Can gynecomastia be treated with exercise?

While pseudogynecomastia can be reduced through exercise by losing overall body fat, true gynecomastia can not be treated or reduced with exercise and surgery is the best handling for it. Pseudogynecomastia occurs when fatty tissue alone fills the male breasts, while gynecomastia occurs when glandular tissue proliferates in the male breasts. Glandular tissue cannot be reduced through exercise but fat can be.
