What is QWO?

QWO is the first and only FDA-approved prescription injectable for the treatment of moderate to severe cellulite in the buttocks of adult women. Treatment is administered right here in our office during comfortable treatment sessions. Three treatment sessions are done 21 days apart, with early results seen within 28 days of treatment. At each treatment session, up to 12 cellulite dimples can be treated per buttock, for a total of 24 dimples treatable per session.
 
To understand how QWO works and why it is so effective, it is helpful to have a basic understanding of what cellulite is and what causes it.

What is cellulite?

Cellulite is an orange-peel like appearance on the surface of the skin. It is most commonly experienced on the buttocks and thighs, but it can also appear in areas such as the upper arms.

If we look below the surface of the skin in these areas affected by cellulite, we find fibrous bands of connective tissue that tether (hold) the skin itself to the muscle beneath the skin. This gives us the valleys or dimples of cellulite.

We also find that between these fibrous bands (called fibrous septae), the fatty tissue is herniating upward, giving us the hills or peaks of cellulite. And, finally, we find that the skin in these areas gets thinner and less taught over time, allowing for both the dimples and the valleys to appear more prominently.

How QWO works

The fibrous bands of connective tissue that cause cellulite are comprised of collagen type I and type III. QWO uses naturally occurring enzymes to target and dissolve those fibrous bands, thus allowing the skin to be released from its unwanted points of tether, restoring a smooth, cellulite- and dimple-free appearance on the surface of the skin.

What is treatment like?

QWO treatment sessions are done right here in a comfortable treatment room. Because the buttocks typically have adequate fatty tissue, the poke of the needle is easily tolerated and treatment sessions are virtually pain-free. The first treatment session will begin with photographs taken of the buttocks so that both patient and practitioner can see and understand what is being treated. At each of the three treatment sessions, you will then lie prone and your aesthetic expert will inject each dimple being treated that session. Immediately after treatment, you can return to your normal social and professional activities.

QWO requires no patient downtime but some side effects should be expected. Injection site bruising is the most common and obvious side effect and it resolves on its own within 21 days. Mild swelling and itching can also occur. Most side effects resolve within 7 to 14 days, with none lasting beyond 21 days. At each subsequent treatment, side effects are also less obvious and shorter-lived.
 
Because of the bruising that occurs with QWO, it is advised that treatment be done several weeks before a planned beach trip or other similar occasion where the buttocks may be exposed.

Results

Results of QWO are typically seen within 28 days of treatment. Three treatment sessions are done to produce the best possible results. Patients can expect treated cellulite dimples to disappear and smooth out, with the surface of the skin restored to a more even texture, free of peaks and valleys.
