First Full Face Transplant Completed in Spain
Monday, April 26th, 2010, 2:16 pmReconstructive surgery can change the lives of patients who suffer from confidence issues due to perceived
disfigurement from a health problem, injury or birth defect. For some patients, the effects prior to reconstructive surgery go far beyond self-esteem, in some cases, particularly when the disfigurement is facial, it can prevent regular functioning like speaking and eating.
Extreme facial disfigurement has lead to innovative procedures like partial facial construction. Just last week, plastic surgery was taken to new levels when the world’s first complete facial reconstruction was completed. The patient was a young farmer, whose name has yet to be released, who has struggled to eat, breathe and swallow since a gunshot accident 5 years ago damaged a large portion of his face.
This is big news for the medical world, particularly in the plastic surgery field. People worldwide have been taking about this amazing achievement with major highlights of the procedure such as:
- the procedure took 22 hours and a total of 30 members of the medical team
- the patient received a whole new face from the hairline down, including facial skin and muscles, nose, lips, maxilla, palate, all teeth, cheekbones, and the mandible
- Only one scar is visible around the neck which resembles a deep wrinkle
- The recovery process will be long and the patient will require physical therapy in order to regain control over the facial muscles in order to talk, eat, and smile
Despite the fact that the patient received the complete facial structure from an anonymous donor, contrary to popular opinion, doctors are assuring the public that there is no resemblance to the donor. Family members have also apparently recognized some similarities from the patient’s original appearance.
This is just the beginning of a new medical era; and once again proves that what was once thought impossible and sounds more like something out of a science fiction film than modern medicine truly is a reality.

Very interesting read. I am a blogger myself and of lately I have found that managing my own site has been a pain in the neck, especially for those technical jargon i have to solve. I recently found a new blogging community where you can just setup a blog and forget about it. Check it out, might be useful later
